MEP BIM Coordination Best Practices:
Navisworks, BCF & Clash Matrix

Complex 3D MEP ductwork and pipework coordination model in Navisworks

1. Structuring the Project Clash Matrix

A effective MEP BIM coordination process begins with a structured Clash Matrix. Running a blanket clash check between all elements creates thousands of non-actionable reports. A prioritized matrix defines clash tests based on discipline hierarchy, tolerances, and element categories.

Routing priority governs who resolves a conflict:

  1. Gravity Drainage / Soil Pipes: Highest priority (fixed pitch slope requirements).
  2. Large HVAC Supply/Return Ducts: High priority (space-consuming rigid elements).
  3. Pressurized Water / Fire Protection Lines: Medium priority (route around ducts and beams).
  4. Electrical Cable Trays & Conduit: Flexible priority (easiest to divert).

In Autodesk Navisworks Manage, set up specific Search Sets instead of raw selection trees. Apply rule-based filters to eliminate false positives:

Clash Test PairClash TypeTolerance (mm)Action / Filter Rule
Structural Beams vs DuctworkHard Clash10 mmIdentify sleeve requirements or web penetrations
MEP Pipes vs Structural FramingHard Clash10 mmRe-route pipe run around member
HVAC Duct Insulation vs Cable TrayClearance Clash50 mmMaintain maintenance envelope
Pipe-to-Pipe Same Line (elbows)Ignore-Apply "Items in same group" rule

3. BCF Issue Tracking Workflows

BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) open standard replaces cumbersome PDF clash reports. Using BCF platforms (e.g., BIMtrack / BIMcollab / Revizto), clash issues are synced directly into Revit environments as 3D viewpoints with element GUIDs.

Issue Lifecycle: New → Assigned → In Progress → Resolved in Revit → Verified in Navisworks → Closed

4. Maintenance & Installation Envelopes

Spatial coordination must account for insulation thickness, pipe hangers, valve maintenance access, and duct flange connections. Modeling 3D clearance geometry in Revit families avoids costly site accessibility failures during facility operation.

MEP Coordination Checklist

  1. 1

    Shared Coordinates

Ensure all discipline models (ARC, STR, MEP) share the exact Project Base Point and Survey Point.

  2. 2

    Search Sets

Build dynamic Navisworks search sets based on OmniClass or Uniformat classification parameters.

  3. 3

    Weekly Coordination Meetings

Focus meetings strictly on unresolved BCF priority 1 issues rather than viewing thousands of raw clashes.
